The town of San Bartolo de Coyotepec (in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico) is known throughout the world for its black pottery.

Black pottery from San Bartolo makes an elegant addition to any home or office.

Skilled potters using traditional firing methods add special fuel to the fire and then seal the kiln. Starving the fire of oxygen produces a thick smoke that chemically combines with the clay to form the black color. Prior to firing, the item is rubbed or burnished with a smooth stone.

This burnishing imparts the beautiful patina finish found in much of the black pottery of Oaxaca, Mexico.
